What Did Don Maxwell Do
at
J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College?

What I did at JSRCC was work as a teacher. I taught courses in poetry writing, fiction writing, composition, American lit, and ESL (English as a second language).

So what?! It's easy enough to list courses--but there are about 150 other full-time faculty members and more than 400 part-timers at that college, all with similar lists. What's so different about what I did? Not much, in most respects. I went to class. I went to committee meetings. I met with advisees. I read memos from the administration.

But I think I did some things differently than most other teachers, and I'd like to tell you about them, if you're willing...

Yes? Then please try this essay on teaching writing that sums up a lot of why I work differently than most other teachers. It probably won't bore you.

Or write to me about teaching--your ideas about how to do it well--and I'll write you back.
