Essay Exam Simulation
Part 1

This is part one of an exercise designed to help you write better examination essays. It's not an exam, but it is a simulation of one. You've been studying for it all your life, so you're well prepared. All you need to do is put your thoughts into words.

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer one of the following questions and explain your answer thoroughly and clearly. (This kind of instruction is often reduced to one word: "Discuss," and then the question is converted to a statement.)

  1. Should every able-bodied eighteen-year-old American be required to perform a year of public service?

  2.
  3. Should newspapers be required to publish the bridegroom's photo along with the bride's?

  4.
  5. Who should be responsible for birth control--men or women?

  6.
  7. Should daughters be required to go by their mother's last name?

N.B., even though you're writing this in class, it's a primary assignment--so take your time.  Explore the subject as thoroughly as you can and write the best essay possible in the time available.
.
N. VERY B.:  IF YOU MISSED THIS CLASS, BE SURE TO WRITE THE ESSAY AND BRING IT TO OUR NEXT CLASS (27 NOVEMBER 2001).
