Dragonfly
My son Chris and I
found this insect biplane lying in the airport parking lot just after
we'd
been flying around in a Cessna 172 on a hot August afternoon.
Evidently,
it had been dead only a short time. It still felt vaguely moist,
and the tail end would curl limply over your finger. At first I
thought
the eyes must be reflecting blue from the sky and looked up to see--but
it was so hazy that the sky looked greyish tan. I put it in the
car
and didn't remember to scan it until the following evening. In
the
interim, its bright colors had darkened noticeably, especially those
blue
eyes--a blue that neither Chris nor I could remember ever having seen
before.
In this scan they look lighter and dryer, but no less intense, than in
our memories. The wingspan is 12 cm (4.75 inches).
